Truth is found in solitude

How can it be otherwise? The truth we are looking for is our own truth, our deepest truth. With other people around, talking or silent, our consciousness is inter-mingling. It is as if the airwaves are busy with the thoughts of all of us. Whilst we are engaged with other people, our energy tends to be going outwards, to them, to meet them, to connect with them, to merge in some way – intellectually, emotionally, sexually. We are somehow avoiding ourself when we are focusing our attention on others. Yet most of us lead a very sociable life, spending most of our time with other people, rarely alone.

On the spiritual journey, the real work is done alone. The real transformation happens in solitude. It is only when we are away from other people that our energy really goes inwards, that we really explore to the depth of our being, and find our own truth, there inside us, at the place where we are one with existence. To touch that place, to find that place, we have to be deeply alone. I am not saying that we should spend our whole life in solitude, as a hermit in a mountain cave, but sometime each day, alone, away from other people, without the entertainment of mobile phones and TV’s, without listening to the radio or reading a book, just alone with ourself, preferably in nature. This gives the space, the silence, for magic to happen within us, for the mysteries of life to reveal themselves from within, for truth to come.
