especially ordinary

Enlightenment is not about becoming special

It is about becoming especially ordinary

Ordinarily, before this great transformation, most of us want to feel special in some way. We might look for this in different ways: by doing something unusual, by discovering something new, by creating a new art. We might look for it in personal relationships. Has no-one ever said to you ‘I want to feel special’? Perhaps you’ve said it yourself. What is this great urge to be special all about? Somehow perhaps we have become lost in the great crowd of humanity. Perhaps we have just lost our sense of self. And if a feeling of specialness comes then we can feel ourself in that specialness.

Underneath all this need to feel special is a deep feeling of something missing, lacking in oneself. The journey to enlightenment takes us to a place so deep within our being that we feel at last whole again, complete, nothing lacking, nothing wanting, perfect we could say. In fact, in this space, there is no question of perfection or imperfection. So, having found this original home, we can be at peace in the world and go about our day ordinarily. We can again be relaxed and happy being especially ordinary.
