Dog laps at puddle
Expanding ripples of morning light engulf me
Imagine this simple scene. A thirsty dog, drinking from a puddle, lapping up water with its tongue. Ordinarily we might see such a scene as something outside of us, separate from us, not connected to us. This is the way our thinking mind likes to see the world. It holds things at a certain distance. And yet, as the dog is lapping at the puddle, creating little ripples in the water which expand and move away from the dog, so the energy of the situation radiates out to any beings that are nearby. And as we watch the light reflecting from those ripples of water, if we allow our thoughts to subside, if we allow our attention to be totally with the scene before us, then those ripples of light can hypnotise us. Yet we can be fully aware of the present moment, as our mind surrenders to the moment, and in a way we drown in those ripples of light. In such circumstances, we are no longer separate from the light, from the ripples of water, or even from the dog and its thirsty tongue as it laps at the puddle. So let’s live our life this way, allowing ourselves to be intoxicated by the moment, to drown in the beauty of the smallest incidents of life. For if we do not fight against such moments, if we open ourself to them, then they can be the greatest gift from existence, a tiny event, yes, yet utterly beautiful, intoxicating.
