Become a disciple of existence

I am often asked whom do I follow? Who is my master? What is my lineage? And to me, these questions already show a great misconception. To become a disciple of a single other human being is to imprison oneself. It may feel great initially to surrender your sovereignty, but you are surrendering it to the wrong thing. If we are spoon fed the truth by a single person, at most we will become a carbon copy of that person, and that is of no value whatsoever. 

Life is not interested in producing clones. No, the only way is to find your own truth. Listen to masters, but don't limit yourself to one. Learn from teachers, but not just people that are generally regarded as teachers. Your friends and family are teachers. Children are great teachers. Everything in nature is a teacher. And this is why I say become a disciple of existence. Surrender yourself to the whole of existence. This way, you have a chance of coming upon the truth.

The truth is not found in words. They can help to point the way, that is all. They can show you a few paths that you might walk down. They can point out a few dead ends to save you the trouble. They can highlight some obstacles that need to be overcome. All of this can help, but that is not the truth. That is to do with your journey to the truth. And your journey will be a unique one, never trodden before, never to be trodden again in the whole of eternity you are unique. And that is what life wants you to be – unique. Existence has only one requirement of you: that you are your authentic self, not just copying someone else.

So don't become a disciple of a master, of any human being. You can learn from people, that's okay. But if you become a disciple, you put yourself in chains, you diminish yourself. There is no value in it. By all means surrender your feeling of choice. By all means give up that foolish notion that you have free will, that you are in control of something. But you don't need to become a disciple of a human being for that. No. Surrender yourself to life, to existence, to god, and you will soon be the truth.
