try leaning against a standing stone

Thousands of years ago, people living in Europe would mark special places in the landscape with a stone – a large stone stood on end. And these standing stones can still be found today, dotted around the landscape: sometimes a single stone standing in a field, sometimes a circle of stones, or more complex arrangements. These stones often mark important energy nodes in the landscape, where the ley lines cross or meet.

And the stones themselves carry that ancient energy of the people who existed before our complicated technological age; a simple people by comparison to ourselves, but nevertheless a people deeply in touch with the rhythms of nature and the energy of our planet. And we can tap into that, that ancient wisdom, merely by going to these special places.

So try it. Find a standing stone and go to it. Kick off your shoes, drop all your baggage, and stand leaning against the stone. Touch it. Rest your back against it. Feel. Don't think too much. Allow those thoughts to subside. Disregard any preconceptions you have, about what you are doing, or what might happen. These just get in the way of real experience. We don't need preconceptions. We just need openness. So stand there, relaxed, and feel. Feel your body. Feel any sensations that are in it. Allow them. This is the way of the lucky ones: we have learned just to allow and enjoy.

And I don't know what will happen for you. With these exercises, there is not a particular endpoint in mind. We are trying to create a space, a space where things can happen, and we can allow them to happen. With that openness of spirit, our growth is assured. We need to do very little: just make the space for it to happen.

And this is one way to do so: to find a standing stone, and try leaning against it. The energy of the millennia will play on you as a flautist plays on her flute. And the song will be delightful. Without even knowing it, a divine music will be emanating from your being. And the world will be happier. And you, too, will be happier.

So try it: try leaning against a standing stone.
