spaciousness

Space. The spaciousness of an empty, quiet mind, is beautiful, vast – infinite – and full of potential. Imagine the physical space of the universe. Imagine the enormity of it. That is an analogy of the spaciousness that can be felt, sensed, when the mind is quiet. But we are not really talking about the physical space of the universe. For indeed, vast though it is, that may not be infinite. The spaciousness of consciousness, of raw consciousness before any thoughts are formed, before even any perception through the senses, this spaciousness is unbounded. It is the entire consciousness of existence, in its unmanifest form, within which all individual consciousness arises. And how we prize our little thoughts, our little personal consciousness! And yet it is nothing without this spaciousness that underlies it.

And so, if you wish to explore, explore deep in your own consciousness, allow the mind to become still so that you may taste the silence and this infinite spaciousness of which I speak. And it tastes good. In fact, the lucky ones have come to appreciate this silent space of potential as much as the manifest forms and thoughts which existence creates from that space, within that space. And when in your own consciousness you can appreciate space and silence as much as the thoughts and feelings that we are ordinarily engaged with, when you can enjoy the spaciousness without the need for it to be filled, then you will see in your day-to-day life, it will be reflected.

For example, if you like to be in a relationship, then when you are not in a relationship there is a space: space for a relationship. And ordinarily people can find this difficult, unpleasant. But if you come to value and appreciate space in its deep form, in your consciousness, then the space between relationships you will come to appreciate too, without any effort, it will just happen automatically. It will follow from your love of the space of consciousness. And then you will be happy in, and out of, relationship. And the same goes for other parts of your life. When you have a job you may appreciate it. When there is a space, between jobs, you can also feel at home there.

So, come to know this spaciousness that is within each of us, within our consciousness. In fact it is the meeting point of our consciousness. In that space there is no duality, no twoness, no separation. There is only one consciousness, the consciousness of existence. Explore it, dwell in it. And then you will also feel that your own thoughts and feelings are less crucial. They become like entertainment, to be enjoyed, yes for sure, but not carriers of truth. The truth is the spaciousness, the silence, and the love which is born of that space. So come, make spaciousness your abode.
