happiness

Perhaps the one thing that all human beings want is to be happy. And we try many different things to find happiness. We may feel that happiness lies in having the perfect relationship; Or that happiness is to be found by having lots of money; Or a dream home; Or perhaps happiness is to be found by moving to a different country; Happiness perhaps can be found by eating delicious food.

There are many different places we seek for happiness. But all these normal answers, to the question of where does happiness lie, all these usual places we look leave us with one difficulty: We become dependent on something which is beyond our control, which is outside of us.

For the enlightened ones, the source of happiness, of the deep happiness, is no longer seen to be in these outward things, though they may still bring surface happiness. But no, when we have reached to our very centre, and found that unwavering place within us, an unlimited energy source, the whole of existence, there within us, this becomes the fountain of our happiness. And it is flowing eternally, unwaveringly. And this is why I call the enlightened ones the lucky ones, for they are essentially happy. There is a deep undercurrent of happiness flowing in their being. Even when the superficial aspects of life are being challenging or unpleasant, this deep happiness is not touched by such things.

So my friends, if you want to find the happiness that is not dependent on the outer world, with its unpredictable ways; if you want to find the lasting happiness, look deep within yourself and come to that place within you which is untouchable by the troubles of life. Come to the source, that is your essence, and you will find it, the source of happiness.
