fern unfolding

Have you noticed the way ferns unfurl? Each frond begins as a tightly curled ball, and slowly, slowly, it uncurls, it spreads itself. Not only that, but off each frond come little branches, each of those too unfurls in a similar way, and on each little branch, tiny leaflets uncurl as well. This, to me, symbolises the growth of our spirit. It’s all there within us, but somehow unseen, curled up in a little ball somewhere deep inside us, waiting its time. And when our spring comes, our spirit too begins to unfurl like the fern, and it’s multidimensional. What’s more, it keeps on unfurling and growing. Who would have suspected it? It comes as something of a surprise, unimagined, unimaginable. This is our essence. This is the true nature of all that is. It’s within us, to begin with curled up tightly, unseen, waiting. But when that unfurling begins to happen we can breathe again, life comes to us. For the first time we feel truly alive. This is what the fern symbolises. It reminds us of our own spirit, our own essence, waiting to flourish, waiting to expand, without end.
